The summer season is here with Wimbledon just finished and the test matches underway, we all want to be outside enjoying the fine weather moving freely and without pain.
In this newsletter we have a few hints for the “Sporting Back”, often associated with summer sports e.g. serve in tennis, bowling in cricket, turn in golf, flexed position in cycling and so it goes on.
Here at Somerset House, the summer series of concerts is underway. Such a beautiful venue to enjoy some wonderful live music.

Here at Covent Garden Physio we firmly believe that “Prevention is better than a Cure.”
If you suffer with an increased back or neck ache after sport and/or find that your performance is hindered by stiffness, it could be that you have a stiff joint or tight muscles causing the problem.
The question is what to do about it? There is always plenty of advice from well meaning friends and on the internet. Is this always the right advice for your specific problem?
When is it time to get further professional advice?
In many cases the pain eases over a couple of days until you repeat the same action and reach a critical level which provokes the symptoms again.
If that is the case then is time to get a thorough assessment to find out what the underlying problem is causing the pain.
A full assessment from an experienced physiotherapist will include looking at your movement, muscle balance, timing and repeated action that is causing the problem.
Power in many sports is generated from the legs and core. It is proven that good flexibility and strong abdominal muscles make a huge difference to the power of play and prevention of injury.
To identify what is causing your stiffness and pain, please contact us for an assessment and individual exercise programme by a chartered physiotherapist to strengthen and mobilise your spine to prevent recurrence.
