How we treat


ASSESSMENT

This involves taking a history of the problem and any other relevant information required, followed by a physical examination. After this the physiotherapist will give you a clinical opinion and advice you on the most appropriate treatment.


MANUAL THERAPY

This may consist of any of the following :

Mobilisation, a method of gently moving the joints within their available range to ease pain and gain more movement.

Manipulation, a high velocity thrust technique to loosen a stiff joint and relieve pain.

Soft tissue massage including acupressure, trigger point therapy and muscle energy techniques.


REHABILITATION

Exercises designed to improve and increase strength appropriate for the individuals stage of recovery.

Exercises designed to correct muscle and postural imbalance.

Proprioceptive Neuromusclar Facilitation (PNF) for regaining strength and stability.

Supervised gym programmes including use of the gym machines and free weights.

Stability exercises which may include use of the swiss ball.

Proprioceptive, balance and coordination work.


ELECTROTHERAPY

Ulrasound.

Interferential therapy.


BIOMECHANICAL ANALYSIS

Observing the way the whole body works during movement and correcting any muscle imbalance.


HYDROTHERAPY

Exercises in water using the buoyancy, to aid recovery particularly useful in the non weight bearing stage of recovery and following fractures and for arthritic conditions to mobilise and strengthen muscles.


ERGONOMICS

Ergonomic advice will be given and postural exercises to maintain a healthy spine in sitting.


EDUCATION AND PREVENTION

Advise on stretching, warm up and prevention of injury.


ACUPUNCTURE

The physiotherapist may use acupuncture with conventional treatments where appropriate.
