Ok, let’s not talk about the marathon again. For those who are not doing it, I am sure you are a bit tired of all the marathon-related newsletters.

Shall we get into bed instead?

(That being said, if you are training, don’t scroll away—this is actually the most important “workout” you’ll do all week.)

Instead of pounding the pavement, let’s talk about hitting the sheets. We’re constantly told we need more rest, but eventually, all those “sleep hygiene” tips start to sound like background noise. I’m not here to give you another generic lecture on why sleep is good; I want to look at the hard science of how quality rest actually repairs your physical body.

For the vast majority of us living and working in Central London, sleep is the first thing to be sacrificed when life gets busy. We run on coffee, adrenaline, and six hours of shut-eye. But here is the reality check: hitting the snooze button on your sleep is having a direct, measurable impact on your physical pain and recovery.

Let’s pull back the covers and look at exactly what happens to your body when you finally switch off for the night.

 

 

The Big Picture: Benefits of Sleep

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of muscles and joints, let’s look at other benefits of a good night’s sleep. 

 

The Physio Connection: The “Six-Hour” Pain Penalty

We used to think that a bad back or a stiff shoulder was purely mechanical, you lifted something heavy, or you slept in a funny position. But the latest sports medicine and physiotherapy research highlights a massive, undeniable link between sleep deprivation and musculoskeletal pain.

Here is why sleep is your body’s ultimate, natural physiotherapy partner:

1. Pain Perception and Sensitivity This is a huge one for our patients. Research shows that sleep deprivation significantly lowers your pain threshold. When you are exhausted, the pain centers in your brain become hyperactive, making that achy lower back or stiff neck feel much worse than it actually is. Better sleep acts as a natural analgesic, helping to dial down your nervous system’s threat response.
