Stepping into Summer: The Science Behind the ‘Summer Shoe Shift’
The sun is finally making a regular appearance over London! It is officially time to ditch the heavy winter boots in favour of lighter summer footwear. However, before you slip straight into those thin flip-flops for your commute, we need to talk about your feet.
The sudden transition from enclosed, supportive winter shoes to completely flat summer sandals is a massive shock to your lower body. Musculoskeletal reviews show that up to 72% of the population wear unsupportive footwear, directly linking to foot pain, and nearly a quarter (23%) of people report discomfort specifically caused by flat, flimsy summer shoes.
Common “Summer Shift” Injuries
When your feet suddenly lose their usual structural support, we typically see a clinic spike in these three main areas:
- Heel and Arch Pain (Plantar Fasciitis)
- Tendon Overload (Achilles & Tibialis Posterior)
- Joint and Alignment Issues

Here is how to navigate the “summer footwear shift” pain-free.
Prep Your Feet: Intrinsic Muscle Exercises
To help your feet handle the extra workload, you can strengthen the small muscles deep within your foot that act as your body’s natural arch support. Try these quick exercises daily:
- Short Foot (Doming): Stand barefoot. Without curling your toes, pull the ball of your foot back toward your heel to lift your arch. Hold for 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times.
- Toe Yoga: Keep your foot flat on the floor. Lift only your big toe, then press it down and lift the other four. Alternate 10 times.
- Towel Curls: Place a small hand towel on the floor and use your toes to scrunch it towards you.

Physiotherapist-Approved Summer Footwear
You do not have to sacrifice style for healthy feet. Look for contoured footbeds, deep heel cups, and secure straps:
- Structured Classics (Birkenstock, Vionic): Brilliant for built-in arch support and deep heel cups that mould to your feet over time.
- Shock Absorbers (FitFlop, OOFOS, HOKA): Featuring thick, biomechanically engineered foam, these effortlessly absorb London pavement shock.
- Active Options (Teva, Chaco): Rugged soles with built-in support and secure ankle straps, perfect for outdoorsy weekends.
Top Tip: Don’t switch overnight! Break in your summer shoes at home for an hour or two a day before hitting the city streets.
