March Newsletter

What a difference the sun makes. Training for events is so much easier when its dry under foot! In this newsletter we are highlighting the importance of footwear and biomechanics in the prevention of knee, hip and back problems. Podiatry in conjunction with physiotherapy is helpful in identifying issues that can occur when training steps up.

STAFF CHANGES

Nora Mulcahy is away on sabbatical in Niseko, Japan until the end of May/early June. To find out how she’s getting on, her blog will keep you posted:

In the meantime, Adrian Binns and Simon Redstone are covering her hours. They have a wealth of experience between them and a special interest in functional rehabilitation. Both are keen cyclists. We welcome them to the team.

IMPORTANT NEWS

We would like to inform you of our intended move to larger premises at the end of June/early July due to the lease on our current premises expiring.

We are delighted to announce that we only be 5 minutes walk away in the New Wing of Somerset House (access from Waterloo Bridge). We will be offering very similar facilities. More details to follow in the near future.

WHAT PODIATRY OFFERS RUNNERS

What Podiatry offers runners at Covent Garden Physio.

Written by Sas Ahmadi Podiatrist

Most humans are blessed with the ability to run. Ever since the running revolution of the 1970s there has been an exponential increase in the number of recreational runners. There was a time when the aim of most long distance runners was completing a marathon. Today however, regular participation in races is the norm for many recreational runners. What’s also known is that upto 75% develop running injuries – so clearly something’s going wrong!

It stands to reason that some of us are not blessed with Mo Farah biomechanics and physiology. So what can be done?

Who would benefit from gait analysis?

Video Gait Analysis helps to identify running mechanics:
alignment and movement patterns-it certainly isn’t just to find out whether you overpronate! So it’s particularly useful in those with previous injury or those affected with pain when running.

Take ‘Runners Knee’ for example – Unfortunately the knee is at the mercy of what happens above it at the hip and below it at the foot, so it’s is very important to have this interaction assessed when running.

Together with a thorough biomechanical examination, gait analysis helps to guide a robust treatment programme that may include Physiotherapy, strength and conditioning input, changes to your running gait, orthotic insoles and footwear changes.
