Pilates
Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that focuses on strengthening muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility. Named after its creator, Joseph Pilates, who developed the exercises in the early 20th century, Pilates emphasizes core strength, breath control, and mindful movement. The exercises can be performed on a mat or using specialized equipment, such as the Reformer, which uses springs and pulleys to provide resistance.
Key Principles of Pilates
1. Concentration: Focus on precise movements and muscle engagement.
2. Control: Perform exercises with deliberate and controlled motions.
3. Centering: Strengthen the core, which is considered the “powerhouse” of the body.
4. Flow: Move with smooth, continuous transitions between exercises.
5. Precision: Execute each movement with accuracy and proper alignment.
6. Breath: Coordinate breathing with movement to enhance muscle engagement and relaxation.
Benefits of Pilates
– Improved Core Strength: Enhances stability and support for the spine.
– Increased Flexibility: Promotes a greater range of motion and muscle elasticity.
– Better Posture: Encourages proper alignment and reduces the risk of postural issues.
– Enhanced Mind-Body Connection: Fosters awareness of body mechanics and movement patterns.
– Injury Prevention: Strengthens muscles evenly and improves balance, reducing the likelihood of injuries.
Types of Pilates
– Mat Pilates: Uses body weight and minimal equipment, such as bands and balls, to perform exercises on a mat.
– Reformer Pilates: Utilizes a Reformer machine, which adds resistance through springs and cables to challenge the body in various ways.

Pilates team
Brian Allen:
Brian’s introduction to Pilates came during his professional ballet training and became crucial after an injury led him to train as an instructor for his rehabilitation. He trained with Alan Herdman and began teaching at Herdman’s central London studio in 2006. He has also taught at the Central School of Ballet, the Harbour Club, and other gyms, covering both Mat and Apparatus work.
Brian’s personal rehabilitation experience has given him valuable insights into using Pilates for injury recovery. He has worked with dancers and athletes, collaborating closely with physiotherapists.
Cara May Marcus:
Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Cara began her professional career as a contemporary ballet dancer in South Africa, Seattle, New York, and London. Her interest in Pilates developed from using the technique to rehabilitate her dance injuries. After completing the Alan Herdman teacher training course, she joined his faculty in 2016. She has also taught Pilates and body conditioning for the Central School of Ballet Associates Programme.
Cara is dedicated to using Pilates for injury prevention and rehabilitation and is committed to continued education to better serve her clients.
Jonathan Dave:
Jon graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2009 with a degree in Physiotherapy, following a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from Nottingham Trent University. He specializes in combining manual therapy with specific strength and conditioning training to treat conditions like recurrent back pain, knee pain, and shoulder pain. Jon focuses on addressing the root cause of injuries rather than just alleviating symptoms, tailoring treatment and rehabilitation programs to suit each patient’s lifestyle.
In addition to his physiotherapy qualifications, Jon is a certified Mat Pilates instructor and Personal Trainer, integrating these disciplines into his patient care. Recently, he has expanded his expertise to include Laryngeal Manual Therapy, beneficial for treating TMJ issues and supporting vocal health in performers in London and beyond.
