London Marathon: Final Preparations

Three weeks to go to the London Marathon. The culmination of months of training is approaching, and the focus now shifts from building distance to refining your preparation. This is a critical period for making sure your body is primed for the unique demands of a marathon. The emphasis is on recovery, tapering, and addressing any lingering issues, to make sure you get to that finish line.

It’s essential to pay close attention to your body. Any niggles or discomfort should be addressed promptly. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us for a consultation if you have any concerns. Prioritise adequate sleep and stress management to support your overall well-being.

Continue with regular foam rolling and stretching to maintain flexibility and release muscle tension. Focus on key areas such as the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves, as well as your lower back and hips. Incorporate dynamic stretches before light activities, and static stretches after.

Sports massage can be incredibly beneficial and helpful in this final stage of your journey. It can address persistent muscle tightness or imbalances, helping in recovery and preventing potential issues on race day. Our experienced massage therapists at Covent Garden Physio will help your marathon preparation and can provide tailored treatments to address your specific needs.

Adhere strictly to your tapering schedule. Gradually reduce your weekly mileage to allow your body to recover and replenish energy stores. Resist any temptation to catch up on missed training. It’s too late now so trust in the work you’ve already put in.

Your race-day nutrition strategy should be well-established by now. Ensure you are comfortable with your chosen gels, bars, and drinks. Maintain consistent hydration throughout the day, and practice your electrolyte intake.

Prioritise recovery and rest. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Incorporate gentle active recovery, such as light walking, cycling or swimming, to promote blood flow and reduce stiffness.

These final weeks are about refining your preparation and ensuring you arrive at the start line in optimal condition. Listen to your body, stick to your plan, and you will be well-prepared for the challenge ahead. We’re here to support you every step of the way.

Happy running and most importantly enjoy yourself.

NEW! Shockwave Therapy service.

Are you suffering from plantar fasciitis or chronic tendinopathies such as tennis/golfers elbow or Achilles tendon? A reminder that we are now offering Radial Shockwave Therapy. It’s a non-invasive treatment that delivers low-energy pressure waves into damaged tissues such as tendons and muscles. This process increases blood flow, provides pain relief, and stimulates the body’s natural repair and regeneration processes, allowing it to restart its own healing.
