🏃♀️ Get Marathon-Ready with Expert Physio Support 🏃♀️
The London Marathon 2025 is set for Sunday, April 27, 2025. This may seem far away, but December is the perfect time to begin your training journey. Whether it’s your first marathon or you’re chasing a personal best, now’s the time to lay the groundwork. Success starts with setting a solid foundation with a proactive approach to your health. We (physios) often say, prevention is better than cure! Here’s how to train smarter, and stay injury-free.
1. Address Any Niggles Early Before Training Ramps Up
The off-season is the ideal time to start your marathon prep, and it’s vital to address any niggles or unresolved injuries early. The faster you deal with an injury, the easier it is to fix. A physiotherapist can identify the root cause of discomfort and create a tailored treatment plan to resolve it swiftly. Early intervention keeps minor issues from turning into major setbacks later.
2. Start with the Right Training Plan
Choosing the right training plan is key to marathon success. Be realistic and select a plan that aligns with your experience, fitness level, and goals. Beginners should opt for a plan that gradually increases mileage to prevent injuries, while experienced runners can benefit from plans with speed work, tempo runs, and targeted mileage. Explore free or paid online resources, join a running club, or hire a coach for a personalized plan.
3. Injury Prevention: Train Smarter, Not Just Harder
Strength training is a key part of marathon preparation, helping to prevent injuries and improve running efficiency. While there’s no shortage of generic advice online, a physio-led programme is tailored specifically to your needs, making it far more effective and efficient. Remember, one size does not fit all.
- Common focus areas include:
- Glutes: Strengthening these muscles with exercises like squats and single-leg deadlifts can prevent hip and knee problems.
- Core: Core exercises such as planks help improve balance and running posture.
- Calves and Ankles: Calf raises and resistance exercises are great for preventing Achilles and foot injuries.
This personalised approach ensures your training targets the areas you need most to keep you strong and injury-free.
4. Keep Flexible and Mobile
Dynamic stretches before a run and static stretches afterwards are key to reducing stiffness and improving your range of motion. Pilates, Foam rolling, yoga, and mobility sessions can also do wonders for recovery and flexibility. With education and understanding, a tailored programme is more targeted, effective, and time efficient.
5. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Recovery
Recovery is vital for adapting to marathon training demands. Include rest days, cross-training, and recovery tools like massage or hydrotherapy in your routine to stay injury-free throughout the season.
6. Be Shoe-Savvy
The right running shoes are crucial to prevent injuries. Replace them every 500–800 km based on shoe type, running style, surface, and your build. A professional gait analysis at a specialist shop or physiotherapy clinic can help you find the perfect fit for your running style.
Start Your Training Strong
With the London Marathon on April 27, 2025, start preparing now by addressing injuries, building strength, and maintaining flexibility to ensure you’re ready to succeed on race day.
