Welcome to our Spring Newsletter

As we write this, Spring still feels in the distant future. We hope the cold hasn’t affected your training schedule. In this newsletter we have a few tips for all our runners. Good luck for the marathon, whether Paris, Brighton or London!

We are pleased to welcome Luke Abnett to Covent Garden Physio. Luke graduated from the University of Queensland, Australia in 2002. His main areas of clinical interest lie in long-term spinal pain, sports injuries and hypermobility (very flexible people). He has worked with various sports teams including tennis, rowing and running and is currently the sole physio at the Royal Ballet School in Covent Garden. We are sure Luke will be a great asset to our team.

SMART TRAINING FOR MARATHON RUNNERS

With New Year/Christmas fun over, and London, Brighton and Paris marathons nearing, there are a lot of you running out there. Here are a few ideas of what to do to ensure you keep running injury free:

  • Stretch: Effective stretching = 3-4 reps of 30 seconds hold (all of your major muscle groups, especially through the lower limbs). You should stretch the major muscle groups for running – quads, hamstrings, glutes and calfs.
  • Running gear: Make sure you are wearing supportive footwear that is not too old. You should be looking to replace existing trainers after approximately 600 miles… and be sure to utilise specialist running shops who will thoroughly assess your foot type and point you in the right direction of the trainers best suited to you.
  • Cross train: Mix it up to allow good recovery from the impact of running. E.g. cross trainer, spinning, swimming and cycling.
  • Train smart: Use a programme, alternative and effective training like interval training, sprint training and circuit training.
  • Rest: Including some rest days is vitally important to help prevent overtraining injuries and gives your body time to implement the benefits of training.

Alternatively, for a thorough assessment, visit our in-house podiatrist Sas Ahmadi for a biomechanical assessment, advice on footwear and injury prevention.

For more information please do not hesitate to contact the team. Happy running!

PODIATRY

Sas Ahmadi (previously a podiatrist with BodyFactor) is now offering biomechanical assessments with a view to fitting customised orthotics for optimum performance.
