Spring Newsletter

As we write this it feels more like summer than spring.  Looking into the courtyard here at Somerset House we can see plenty of reasons why people would want to take their lunch outside in the sunshine, stretching their legs away from their desks.  A recent survey revealed that only a fifth of people leave their work place to go outside.  See below for a few tips on correct posture at work.
Good luck to all our marathon runners.  We hope it is not too hot on the day and remember to stretch well before and after.  We would love to know how you get on!

STAFF UPDATE

After several years at the clinic it is with sadness that we wish Nora Mulcahy a final farewell this month.  Nora has worked here between ski seasons and travelling and brought a wealth of experience to the clinic.  She is moving back to Ireland in the short term and we wish her well in her next move.
We are delighted to welcome Eve Emaru in Nora’s place.  Eve has played basketball at international level and works as a physiotherapist for the youth basketball team.  She has a special interest in goal specific rehabilitation, Pilates and injury prevention.

TIPS FOR GOOD POSTURE AT YOUR DESK

12th June is work out at work day.  We would like to help prevent injury by encouraging movement throughout the day.  Static postures often lead to muscle tension and joint stiffness which can lead to pain in the neck, back and shoulders.
Follow these hints for perfect posture at your desk:

  • No slouching!
  • Sit with your bottom right at the back of your seat and rest against the back of your chair for support.
  • Rest your forearms on your desk with your elbows at a 90 degree angle.
  • Relax your shoulders don’t allow them to hunch up under your ears.
  • Your feet should be flat on the floor and your knees level or slightly lower than the hips.
  • Imagine there is a piece of string coming from the top of your head to the ceiling to prevent slumping and help to maintain an upright position.
  • Finally, most chairs are adjustable to enable good posture.
