Autumn Newsletter 2015

Greetings!

We are pleased to announce that our new mobile friendly website is now up and running. We hope that this makes it easier for our patients to contact us and continue to use the online booking facility.

As the Rugby World Cup continues to dominate the sports pages this autumn, tension is rising between the Aussies and the Kiwis in the clinic! The less said about the English (and now all the Northern Hemisphere teams) the better. We have been asking ourselves why are so many players getting injured and what more can we do in the clinic to help prevent injury?

STAFF UPDATE

No changes this quarter. Kevin Kong continues as our clinical lead physio supported by Anthony Vidis, Andy Marshall, Lene Cunis, Eve Emaru and Luke Abnett.

Mark Edmonds continues as our sports massage therapist and Brian Allen teaches one to one Pilates.

RUGBY WORLD CUP INJURIES

This weekend we saw less injuries in the quarter finals of the competition.  However, in previous rounds there has been significant number.

Surveys from previous World Cup competitions showed an injury rate of 83.9/1000 player hours in 2007 and 89.1/1000 in 2011 which isn’t significantly different. However it remains to be seen what the 2015 World cup rate will be.

Is there a reason for the high number of injuries?

The players are all now bigger, stronger and faster. The average weight in the England team in 1994 before professional rugby came in was 92.3kg and now it is 102kg which is a significant increase. This coupled with faster speeds appears to be increasing the force and load at contact.

Can we help to prevent injury?

As physiotherapists we are continually supporting sportsmen through events to help them reach their maximum potential whilst remaining injury free. The main aim is to assess for any areas of weakness, stiffness, muscle imbalance and check for problems with timing and coordination. This is sports specific and a good understanding of the sport and demands of the event are essential. In rugby once all of these factors have been addressed, taping e.g. kinesiotape helps to support muscles, ligaments and joints protecting and preventing further injury.
